DIPOLOG CITY (PIA) – Through Executive Order No. 22 signed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos in April 2023, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) established its water resources management office, comprising of government agencies tasked with ensuring sustainable water availability.
During this week’s Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas press conference, DENR-9 Regional Executive Director Arturo Fadriquela highlighted the significant increase in the classification of rivers and water bodies. This classification guides local government units (LGUs) in implementing policies to ensure water safety and effective water management.
“Through improved water movement and irrigation structures, we have modernized agriculture, increased income, and enhanced food security,” Director Fadriquel said.
Under the DENR’s Small Water Impounding System (SWIS) Project, which includes a water storage system with an earth embankment spillway outlet designed to utilize water from nearby sources, the regional office has constructed 15 water impounding systems with a total capacity of 828 cubic meters. These systems are used for domestic, agricultural, and gardening purposes, directly benefiting 450 households and 365 farmlands.

Fadriquela also briefly discussed the Recognizing Individuals/Institutions Towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (RIVERs) for Life Award, aimed at promoting river conservation and recognizing collaborative efforts of individuals and institutions in combating water pollution and improving water quality in rivers.
Under the Water Resources Management Office, DENR-9 currently monitors 61 water-related infrastructure projects, including flood control initiatives and solar water systems under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
“This ongoing oversight ensures that these projects are effectively contributing to our water management and conservation efforts,” Fadriquel assured. (JPA/PJF/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
