DENR-Abra drums up environment conservation and protection in Zumbalikasan, community tree planting

BANGUED, Abra (PIA) – Senior citizens, police officers, and members of the community grooved to promote fitness and taking care of the environment during the ‘Zumbalikasan’ at the Casamata Hill National Park in this capital town.

Aside from the Zumba activity, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO)-Abra also held a tree planting activity and tree seedling distribution to boost support to the reforestation efforts in the province.

PENR Officer Marcelo Bumidang shared that the activities are part of the initiative to promote environment conservation and protection in celebration of the Environment Month this June.

“We want to thank our participants who responded to our invitation to join us today. This manifests your support to our objective,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abra Provincial Police Office Community Affairs and Development Unit Chief PMaj. Daniel Pel-ey assured continuous support from the uniformed personnel.

“We commit that ang ating kapulisan ay handang makilahok sa mga gawain para sa ating kalikasan,” he said.

During the tree planting activity, 64 Camachile, 16 Bulala, and five Mahogany tree seedlings were planted at the Casamata Hill National Park. A total  of 28 Gmelina, 30 Camachile, and two Narra seedlings and packs of fertilizers were also distributed to the participants to encourage them to plant more trees.

The PENRO Abra with partners earlier distributed free tree seedlings to residents in Bangued and Lagangilang to kick-off the Environment Month celebration.

From 2011 to 2024, Abra was able to plant trees in 44 hectares with an average survival rate of 70 to 75 percent. Bumidang said that this accomplishment is under the National Greening Program, a massive forest rehabilitation initiative of the government to promote sustainable development, environment stability, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
