LA TRINIDAD,Benguet (PIA) — The Environmental Management Bureau in the Cordillera region is reaching out to schools in the municipality of Sablan in Benguet through its EnviReading Caravan.
The caravan is an initiative of the Environmental Education and Information Unit of the EMB which is organized in partnership with schools. It is a reading activity using stories focused on solid waste management and climate change.
The EMB team recently visited the Jose Gonzales Elementary School in Bagong, Sablan where information officer Mary Claire Luminang served as “reading ambassador”. She read stories focused on climate change, and solid waste management.
Randy Berdal from the solid waste management section discussed proper waste segregation, and demonstrated how to do it with the help of the participants.
The team also presented, and encouraged the school to participate in the search for sustainable and eco-friendly schools, which aims to recognize educational institutions with the best sustainable, and eco-friendly programs and activities.
Learners and teachers also met “Basura Buster” who is the face of the DENR’s solid waste management advocacy campaign. The mascot serves as an inspiration of the youth to advocate for ecological solid waste management.
The EnviReading caravan also supports the Department of Education’s Catch-Up Fridays wherein schools in the country are required to dedicate at least a half day per week for reading activities.
The EMB earlier brought the caravan to the Omas Ampaguey Integrated School in Balluay, Sablan.
The team will soon visit Yabyabuan Multi-Grade School for the last leg of the EnviReading Caravan: Sablan Edition.
