DENR: Rare Rafflesia bloom spurs wildlife conservation in northern Mindanao

MALAYBALAY CITY (PIA) — “The world’s largest flower, the Rafflesia, thrives in Baungon, Bukidnon, symbolizing the rich biodiversity of northern Mindanao,” Henry Adornado, regional executive director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-10 reported during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas media forum on July 16.

He emphasized that Baungon’s rainforests at the foot of Mount Kitanglad, one of the four ASEAN Heritage Parks in the region, are critical habitats for endangered species. These habitats, located outside protected zones, house threatened species, making their management essential for preserving fragile ecosystems.

“The presence of Rafflesia signifies northern Mindanao’s unique flora and fauna, inspiring efforts to protect these ecosystems,” he said.

Nurturing the marvelous bloom

Rafflesia lives on the stems and roots of woody vines. Its large, pink, five-lobed bloom can reach up to 36 inches wide, with petals that are 18 inches long and one inch thick. Weighing between seven and 11 kilos (15-24 lbs), Rafflesia is a genus of parasitic, rootless, stemless, and leafless plants known for their putrid odor.

“Conserving Rafflesia is not just about protecting a species but maintaining the region’s wildlife diversity for future generations. We adhere to Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act to intensify efforts,” Adornado said.

DENR-10, in partnership with the Department of Tourism and the provincial government of Bukidnon, has partnered with the local government of Baungon to protect the Rafflesia.

Baungon has enacted an ordinance prohibiting the destruction, uprooting, or relocation of the rare flower to ensure its survival and growth. It also prohibits the pulling up of woody vines. Violators face fines ranging from P5,000 to P50,000—depending on the severity of the offense.

Preserving biodiversity

Adornado clarified that DENR-10’s efforts to protect and manage the environment are crucial amid rising issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and waste management, which require support from government and non-government organizations, academe, private entities, civil societies, and indigenous communities.

“The conservation of Rafflesia in Bukidnon exemplifies the effectiveness of RA 9147. Protecting and managing critical habitats are vital for the survival of the world’s largest flower and other endangered species. This achievement reflects DENR’s broader commitment to sustainable environmental care,” Adornado said. (RLRB/PIA-10/Bukidnon)
