DENR Region 1 encourages Filipinos to go eco-friendly this holiday season

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 1 advocates for a greener Christmas this year, urging Filipinos to adopt waste-free practices to protect the environment while celebrating the holiday season.

DENR-Region 1 Regional Executive Director, Atty. Crizaldy Barcelo emphasized the importance of incorporating sustainability into holiday traditions.

“This Christmas, let us take the time to reflect on the importance of protecting our natural resources. Together, we can give the greatest gift to future generations—a healthier environment,” Barcelo said.

To support this initiative, the DENR provided practical and actionable tips for reducing waste during Christmas celebrations:

  • Sustainable Gift Wrapping: Instead of traditional wrapping paper, which often isn’t recyclable, use fabric wraps, reusable gift bags, or scarves.

This practice reduces waste and adds a unique touch to your gifts.

  • Eco-Friendly Decorations:Craft ornaments from natural items like pinecones or recycled materials like plastic bottles.

Use LED lights for energy-efficient lighting.

  • Smart Party Planning:Prepare meals based on the number of guests to avoid excess food.

Use real dishes instead of disposable ones to reduce waste.

  • Proper Waste Segregation:Recycle materials that can be recycled.

Compost organic waste.

Dispose of non-recyclable and non-compostable waste responsibly.

Barcelo noted that these efforts align with the Marcos administration’s 8-Point Socioeconomic Agenda, which prioritizes environmental protection and sustainable development.

The DENR Region 1 also announced partnerships with local government units to strengthen information and education campaigns to encourage families to adopt eco-friendly practices during the holidays.

Workshops and other community activities will guide sustainability.

“As we close the year 2024, let us celebrate Christmas in a more meaningful and sustainable way. By doing so, we honor not only the spirit of the season but also our responsibility to care for our environment,” Barcelo concluded.

The DENR Region 1 remains committed to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and calls on all Filipinos to make this season of protecting the Earth for future generations. (AMB/AIHR/PIA Region 1)
