DENR trains youth in snake identification, basic mountaineering survival skills

M’LANG, Cotabato Province (PIA) — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently capacitated the members of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay Poblacion A in the municipality of M’lang with basic skills in snake identification and mountaineering survival.

The DENR-Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in the municipality of Matalam led the activity, which was a part of the Linggo ng Kabataan 2024 celebration.

The initiative aims to raise awareness and educate the youth on environmental and natural resource issues, ensuring that the younger generation actively participates in the protection and preservation of their respective communities.

Forester Rosie R. Camiguing, Chief of the Wildlife and Conservation Unit, provided an in-depth overview of Republic Act 9147, commonly referred to as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

Elaborating on specific provisions, Camiguing outlined fines and penalties for individuals who knowingly and willfully engage in the unlawful exploitation of wildlife resources and their habitats.

During the training, DENR provided participants with important information on snake venom classifications and effects, as well as an overview of the safe handling and distinguishing features of different snake species.

This is important to arrive at an accurate identification for safety purposes, Camiguing explained.

The topic specifically covered critical first aid techniques and procedures to address common injuries and emergencies in mountaineering activities.

They also received hands-on training in basic knot tying, allowing them to practice creating secure knots that are essential for survival situations.

SK Kagawad Kier John Esparagoza of Barangay Poblacion A emphasized the importance of the activity when it comes to raising awareness and inspiring youth to get actively involved in protecting the environment.

“We can cultivate an informed and proactive generation to preserve our planet by educating and involving the youth in my barangay,” he said, expressing optimism that the activity will empower the youth to be models in environmental protection and preservation.
