DepEd-5 directs schools to adopt distance learning during class suspensions

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay (PIA) – The Department of Education (DepEd-5) in Bicol region has directed Schools Division Offices (SDOs) to adjust their learning modality and adopt a modular distance learning during localized class suspension due to the effects of weather disruptions such as typhoon, flooding, and torrential rains.

In a statement on Thursday, DepEd-5 Regional Director Gilbert Sadsad said the directive was based on DepEd Order 37 or the guidelines on the cancellation and suspension of classes and work in schools in the event of natural disasters, power outages, power interruptions and other calamities.

Sadsad said modular distance learning, performance task, projects, or other similar activities shall be implemented to ensure that learning competencies and objectives are met by students.

He also instructed SDOs to distribute self learning modules (SLMs) to be used by schools during class suspensions.

“The issuance of additional guidelines on the adjustment of learning delivery during suspension of classes is aimed at ensuring learning continuity and mitigate learning loss amid the series of cancellation of classes brought about by torrential rains and other weather systems in the region,” he said.

Further, Sadsad reminded schools to ensure that SLMs are properly used, safeguarded from natural and human elements, and recorded.

“The SLMs are provided to teachers and students for free and are intended to be used for at least five years. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every learner, teacher, and school head to exert effort to protect the learning resources from damage or loss to prolong its lifespan,” he added. (PIA5)
