TACLOBAN CITY (PIA) — The Department of Education (DepEd) Region VIII acknowledged the athletes’ exceptional performances at the culmination of the Palarong Pambansa in Cebu City.
Congratulations to all EVRAA athletes and supporters for this historic achievement. Together, we will continue this journey of excellence and inspire future generations of athletes,” said Evelyn R. Fetalvero, DepEd regional director.
The Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) delegates won 54 medals in total at the 2024 Palarong Pambansa.
During the sports competition, they clinched 18 gold, 14 silver, and 22 bronze medals, a significant historical victory for the region.
Meanwhile, in 2015, Eastern Visayas won 11 gold medals. In 2023, EVRAA athletes ranked 14th out of 17 regions, according to DepEd’s record.
In this year’s national competition, Region VIII secured seventh place overall, while the National Capital Region maintained its position as the overall champion.
Jan Dwayne A. Malpas, a 12-year-old from Tacloban City, won four gold medals in swimming and a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle. He has advice for young athletes like him.
My advice to young athletes is to stay focused and avoid getting involved in a relationship before everything else. Just give your all in your studies and sports, and then give your best,” Malpas said.
There are 505 athletes, 82 coaches, 23 assistant coaches, and 17 chaperones who participated in this year’s Palarong Pambansa.
The event commenced on July 9 and concluded on July 16. (CBA, PIA-8)
