PAGADIAN CITY (PIA) – The Department of Education (DepEd)-9 is tackling the lack of infrastructure in remote schools in the Zamboanga Peninsula by securing classroom allocations, providing essential resources, and hiring additional teachers to support continuous learning.

In the recent episode of Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, DepEd Assistant Regional Director Dr. Gregorio Cyrus R. Elejorde, discussed the current state of school facilities in the region and how the department is addressing these issues.
“More allocations from the (DepED) central office are coming for the provision of classrooms in the Zamboanga Peninsula,” he said.
He emphasized that DepEd is working to provide more resources in remote areas, particularly last-mile schools that are often underserved and face infrastructure challenges. The department has also initiated programs to improve classroom facilities and internet connectivity to enhance learning opportunities.
However, Dr. Elejorde admits that due to resource limitations, not all schools can receive immediate support. But to combat overcrowding, DepEd has implemented strategies such as shifting classes to accommodate limited classroom space and is also utilizing alternative delivery modes for students who cannot attend school in person.

Moreover, the department is focusing on building the capabilities of teachers in the region.
“DepEd is building the capability of these teachers to enhance their skills in subjects beyond their own specialization. We are also working to provide more resources to our learners, particularly in schools,” Elejorde stressed.
Many teachers, particularly in junior high school, are teaching subjects aligned with their major areas of expertise.
DepEd-9 hopes that in addressing the various challenges faced by students in the region, the aspirations of giving an adequate and quality education to the children in the Zamboanga Peninsula can be achieved. (EDT/CCP/EAM/PIA-9)
