DepEd backs treated mosquito nets for protection of school children from dengue

SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro (PIA) — The Department of Education has expressed support for the use of insecticide-treated nets in schools to help protect students from dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Dr. Maria Anna Irene San, medical officer of DepEd MIMAROPA, explained that these treated nets are known to effectively reduce mosquitoes in schools.

“When a mosquito comes into contact with the nets, it dies due to the insecticide,” San said.

The Provincial Health Office, which provided the treated nets, reminded DepEd about using these treated nets as window screens, as these may cause indoor temperatures to increase and make classrooms uncomfortably hot.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration had earlier warned that certain towns in Occidental Mindoro could experience a heat index of up to 42 degrees Celsius, which is in the danger category and, according to the Department of Health, could lead to heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses.

San, in response, offered recommendations to thwart this possible scenario

“Let us remove the curtains if treated nets are used as window screens and make sure electric fans are available in classrooms,” she said.

She also emphasized the importance of keeping students hydrated, especially during school hours.

Meanwhile, DepEd Occidental Mindoro has assured the public that they are closely monitoring the health and safety of students, particularly in areas with high numbers of dengue cases.

Education Program Supervisor Eduardo Ellarma clarified that, in addition to following the dengue prevention and control advisory from DepEd’s Central Office, the DepEd Occidental Mindoro medical team is actively conducting information campaigns.

These campaigns emphasize the importance of maintaining a clean environment, eliminating mosquito breeding sites at home and in the community, using insect repellents and wearing long-sleeved clothing whenever possible.

Also, individuals are urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health center or hospital if they exhibit symptoms of dengue.
