QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Department of Education – National Capital Region prepares for this year’s Literacy Coordinating Council’s (LCC) National Literacy Awards (NLA).
In line with RA 7165 as amended by RA 10122, the National Literacy Awards by LCC is a recognition for local government units, non-government organizations and literacy workers for their outstanding literacy programs and initiatives that contribute to eradicate illiteracy in the Philippines.
The preparation includes planning and evaluation which will be composed of committee members from Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Academic Institutions and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) from the NCR.
The NLA will have two major categories starting this year, namely Gawad Liyab and Gawad MATATAG.
Gawad Liyab is for LGUs and NGO’s that implemented exemplary community-based projects and implemented literacy policies that affect the quality of life of their respective communities.
“Liyab” means blaze in Filipino as seen on the LCC logo that depicts the council’s goal for universalizing literacy in the country.
Gawad MATATAG is for public schools, Alternative Learning System (ALS) and Community Learning Centers (CLCs), to recognize their collective efforts on improving learning outcomes and implementing National Learning Recovery Program (NLRP) including National Learning Camp (NLC), Catch-Up Fridays and other relevant commitments of DepEd including financial, literacy, health, values, peace and education.
MATATAG is a term under DepEd curriculum that strives to build globally literate and future-ready citizens. This also seeks to address current and future educational concerns. (AVS / PIA-NCR)
