DepEd Siquijor seeks public, private sectors’ support to Brigada Eskwela

LARENA, Siquijor (PIA) – The Department of Education (DepEd) here called for the public and private sectors to support the Division of Siquijor’s Brigada Eskwela on July 22-27.

Education Program Supervisors for English, Maria Enin Cuevas, and for Araling Panlipunan, Arlene Manginsay, encouraged the government and private organizations to support the Brigada Eskwela, which is a collaborative event involving the communities to prepare schools for the upcoming year.

“This is a bayanihan system wherein we encourage all government and non-government organizations to participate,” Cuevas during the Pulong-Pulong/Info-Sharing of the Siquijor Association of Information Disseminators (SAID) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) held in San Juan, Siquijor.

Sa mga Brigada (in the Brigada), we also have personal services like manglimpyo (cleanup activities), but we also accept materials for paintings, for classroom repairs, and others,” Buhian added.

MATATAG Curriculum

Guided by DepEd Order No. 003 s. 2024, Cuevas and Manginsay also announced other significant programs and activities such as the launching and phased implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum.

The curriculum was introduced by Vice President and DepEd Sec. Sara Z. Duterte, as a significant step in enhancing the K to 12 Basic Education.

Cuevas said the MATATAG Curriculum gives more focus on development of foundational skills.

It will initially be implemented in SY 2024-2025 for Kindergarten, Grades 1, 4, and 7 with full implementation by 2027-2028.

It aims to address educational challenges and prioritize literacy and numeracy skills among learners.

MATATAG stands for (1) Make the curriculum relevant to produce competent, job-ready, active, and responsible citizens; (2) Take steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education facilities and services; (3) Take good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment; and (4) Give support to teachers to teach better.

Earlier, the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Board, chaired by Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has approved DepEd’s MATATAG Agenda and the Basic Education Development Plan (BEDP) as the national policy and plan for basic education in the Philippines during its 15th Board meeting on April 25.

Anchored on the Ambisyon Natin 2040 and responsive to the commitments in the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, BEDP is the country’s first medium-term plan for basic education, covering formal K-to-12 education and non-formal education for youth and adults.

Cuevas said that following the MATATAG roll-out, trainings will be provided to teachers to ensure effective implementation.

This is to also ensure that DepEd remains committed to enhancing the quality of education and supporting the academic growth of the learners.

Buhian also announced DepEd’s hosting of the National Learning Camp from July 1 to 19 focusing on improving literacy and numeracy skills where learners currently enrolled in grades 1-3 will focus on reading and mathematics, while those in grades 7-10 will study English, Science, and Mathematics.

“The program is voluntary for both students and teachers,” she said.

Other activities include the Palarong Pambansa from July 6-17 and Festival of Talents and National Schools Press Conference from July 9-13. (RAC/PIA7 with reports from Dee Che Omandam)
