CEBU CITY, Cebu, Dec. 28 (PIA) – With the full implementation of face-to-face classes in Central Visayas starting November 2022, the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 7 aims to address the issue of reading literacy and comprehension especially among K-3 students.
This was disclosed by Department of Education Central Visayas (DepEd 7) Regional Director Dr. Salustiano Jimenez during the yearend press conference in their office in Sudlon, Lahug, this city on Dec. 27, 2022.
“Based on our survey, 75% of children in the K-3 (Kindergarten to Grade 3) stage still can’t read,” Jimenez said.
Meanwhile, temporary learning spaces (TLS) were built for schools that lacked classrooms which are being used by the students for the meantime.
This after Typhoon Odette damaged public school classrooms across the region when it hit the country on Dec. 16, 2021.
A year after the typhoon struck, there are still 803 out of 5,000 public school classrooms across Central Visayas that have yet to be repaired.
Some of these classrooms were already up for repair last year but were tagged as damaged by the typhoon.
Despite the scarcity of classrooms and the ongoing repairs, DepEd7 has fully implemented face-to-face classes in November.
Apart from the continued repairs of learning facilities, Jimenez said one of DepED7’s priorities is improving the welfare of their employees.
Jimenez added that in terms of teacher welfare, they have promoted 3,538 teachers as of December 2022. (MYP/PIA7 Cebu)
