DHSUD to highlight housing, disaster preparedness efforts

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The 18th episode of Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, set to air this Tuesday, September 24, will feature officials from the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) to discuss not only housing programs but also the agency’s efforts in disaster preparedness and mitigation.

The event will highlight DHSUD’s broader mandate, which goes beyond housing projects like the Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Housing Program (4PH).

Featured guest speakers,  Atty. Norman Jacinto P. Doral, OIC-Regional Director of the National Capital Region Office; Mr. Abel D. Lagon, Head of the Environmental, Land Use, and Urban Planning and Development Division; Atty. Raymundo A. Foronda, Head of the Housing and Real Estate Development Regulation Division; and Mr. Aubrey R. Friginal, Head of the Homeowners Association and Community Development Division, will present DHSUD’s initiatives, which include disaster response and preparedness programs to support Filipinos affected by natural calamities.

One of the key topics that will be discussed is the Integrated Disaster Shelter Assistance Program (IDSAP), launched under the leadership of DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar. IDSAP offers immediate assistance to communities hit by natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, landslides, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. The program provides both financial aid and relief to affected families, helping them recover from the devastation.

Recently, DHSUD extended assistance to over 200 beneficiaries in San Juan City who were affected by fires in Barangays Batis and Rivera. More than ₱3.5 million in aid has already been distributed. In the coming months, an estimated ₱7.2 million will be allocated to approximately 500 beneficiaries in Valenzuela and Parañaque City.

In addition to immediate disaster relief, DHSUD is also leading efforts to promote long-term disaster resilience. The agency is conducting Climate and Disaster Risk Assessments (CDRA) to study hazards and vulnerabilities in different urban areas. This initiative aims to guide local governments and communities in making informed decisions that reduce the risks posed by climate change and other natural disasters.

DHSUD’s commitment to disaster mitigation highlights the importance of comprehensive urban planning, ensuring that cities are not only equipped to house citizens but also prepared to respond to emergencies.

With their wide-ranging initiatives, DHSUD is setting the foundation for a safer, more resilient Philippines.

Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas is organized by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) through the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) to bring timely, relevant, and accurate information about government programs and services to grassroots communities nationwide. (AVS/PIA-NCR)
