DICT advocates for digitally connected Cordillera

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — The Department of Information and Communications Technology is calling for a whole-of -society approach in achieving a digitally connected and empowered Philippines under the Bagong Pilipinas brand of governance of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

In a Kapihan media forum that kicked off the regional celebration of the 2024 National ICT Month, DICT-Cordillera Regional Director Reynaldo Sy outlined that “Bagong Pilipinas” is about creating a better future for the nation, wherein the DICT aims to modernize the country’s infrastructure, enhance digital services, and promote digital literacy.

“From improved connectivity to efficient e-governance, our goal is to build a nation where everybody can thrive in the digital age,” Sy said.

This year’s National ICT Month theme, “Bayang Digital ang Bagong Pilipinas,” emphasizes the shared commitment to realizing a technologically advanced and inclusive society, Sy said. 

“It echoes the collective responsibility for change where digital connectivity unites all, where government services are streamlined through technology, where cyber safety is prioritized, and where innovation and growth opportunities abound for every citizen.”

DICT CAR reported  their  programs in  bracing the region with ICT. In terms of connectivity, under the GovNet, a project that provides internal connectivity among government entities, there are currently 77 connected- 44 national government agencies, 19 local government agencies, nine schools, two hospitals, two government owned and controlled corporations and two state universities and colleges.

For the Free Wifi for All, a free internet access program in public places, there are already 833 sites provided with connectivity, including 421 sites in geographically isolated and displaced areas.

The DICT is also currently working on a Regional Wireless Network, a regional initiative that aims to connect nearby Cordillera provinces to the anticipated bandwidth from the National Backbone Program, which the President recently launched. 

For digital transactions and services, the DICT is also pushing for eLGU or electronic local government units, a one-stop-shop system that combines all LGU services, including licensing, permits, contributions, clearances and payments, among others.

For digital education and capacity building, the DICT – CAR has been conducting ICT training via virtual platforms and in its Digital Transformation Centers, also known as Tech4Ed.

Amidst the challenges in the digital transformation efforts including reaching the GIDAs considering the terrain  in the region, the DICT CAR is committed to fulfilling its mandate of providing access  to vital  ICT infrastructure and services.
