DICT sees potential for Dumaguete to become center for excellence for IT-BPM

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) — Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental have the potential to become a center for excellence for Information Technology at Business Process Management (IT-BPM) industry.

This was noted by Department of Information and Communications Undersecretary for ICT Development Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue during her recent visit to the city for the Regional ICT Summit and Exhibitions of DICT-7.

Batapa-Sigue said now is the time to boost the IT-BPM industry in the province to generate more jobs for people in rural areas.

“This is just my own personal prediction, it will be subject to industry and scientific processes but I see Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental advancing from a Next Wave City to a higher level in the ITBPM industry because you have what it takes to be high in this classification,” said Batapa-Sigue.

She noted that Metro Clark, Metro Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod City, and Bacolod are currently designated by DICT as centers for excellence for IT-BPM.

However, the province still needs to strengthen its ICT eco-system and broaden its scope to entice more investors to put up companies in the province.

The ICT eco-system is composed of local government units, active ICT councils, industry experts, and the academe.

Representatives from each sector will have to craft policies and ensure infrastructures are in place to make sure that the investment environment is more conducive.

“My challenge to Negros Oriental is really create a stronger provincial eco-system, to focus on creating a talent development center for the whole province where the provincial government can invest as well as national policy makers. We should do is to invest in the Filipino development, iyong (the) human talent,” she said.

Students, representatives from academic institutions, local government units, IT-BPM industries, and national government agencies participated in the activity held at the Negros Oriental Convention Center, this city. (RAL/PIA7-Negros Oriental)
