Digkilaan residents benefit from Ronda Barangay, free Wifi project

ILIGAN CITY (PIA)–Residents of Barangay Digkilaan, a hinterland barangay here, benefited from the “Ronda Barangay” program and the Free Wifi Project.

The Ronda Barangay” is a one-stop service program initiated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation of Iligan, Inc. (CCIFII) in partnership with various national government agencies and the private sector.

“Kining Ronda Barangay muhatag og serbisyo. Serbisyo nga tinud-anay nga dili lang karon. Long-term ang among gihuna-huna. Panahon gyud ni na magtinabgay tang tanan [This Barangay Ronda, provides genuine services, not just for now. We are thinking long-term. It is time for us all to help each other],” said CCIFII President Reggie Punongbayan.

During the Ronda Barangay, various stakeholders shared their programs and services with the residents. The Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Agriculture Program for Iligan is committed to helping local farmers through their “Adopt a Farmer” program, where interested farmers will be supported in learning and require market access.

Additionally, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority offered free skills training with scholarships to residents who were interested in learning carpentry and masonry. Skilled carpenters or masons may also undergo assessments to acquire national certificates that will be helpful for their employment.

Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry shared that local entrepreneurs can now register for business permits online.

Dr. Rosario Reserva, director of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology WE CARE Extension Program, mentioned that the university has dedicated programs for women farmers. Additionally, they will be conducting health assessments and are committed to promoting quality education by imparting literacy skills to students. On the other hand, St. Peter’s College will conduct computer literacy classes for the residents.

The Philippine Red Cross conducted bloodletting activities, feeding programs, and proper handwashing demonstrations for the children. Residents also learned basic life skills in case of emergencies.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-10, with the help of Multifactors Sales and CCIFII, also launched “Free WiFi for All” with the goal of enhancing the quality of life for local residents and empowering them to showcase their local products and businesses online.

DICT-10 Regional Director Sittie Rahma V. Alawi stated that access to the internet is far more than a luxury, as it is essential for education, job opportunities, and access to vital services. She said that their office recognized this importance and is actively working to bridge the digital gap.

Meanwhile, Lesly Ann Casibo, a resident, greatly appreciated the provision of free WiFi in their barangay. For her, this connectivity will enable improved communication with the people in the city proper and will be helpful for her children in accomplishing their projects and research at school.

Moreover, Iligan City Police Office City Director of Police Colonel Reinante Delos called on the residents to take good care of the support, services, and programs provided by donors, partner agencies, and companies for their communities. (LELA/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)
