DILG’s focus on quality yields 9% growth in Normin SGLG qualifiers

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — “In 2023, 35 LGUs (local government units) were awarded the Seal of Good Local Governance. That’s around 9 percent rate from the previous number we got, that make us number one or number two in the entire Philippines na nakakamit ng (that earned the) SGLG,” said Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)-10 Regional Director Wilhelm Suyko during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas on July 30.
 
Since the beginning of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s administration in 2022, Suyko said the DILG has undertaken several initiatives aimed at improving local governance, enhancing public safety, and promoting community development. It intensified its efforts to keep the SGLG in place.

DILG-10 recently conducted the SGLG Regional Calibration and First Shortlisting, where the department recognized the Regional Assessment Team (RAT) for their hard work in conducting the SGLG Audit despite their many responsibilities. Suyko also expressed deep gratitude for the support from field officers and the partner Learning Resource Institute in facilitating the onsite assessment.

“I am delighted that the LGU of Cagayan de Oro is part of the national validation process for the SGLG. This is a living testament to the commitment and dedication of the men and women in our local bureaucracy, who adhere to the highest standards and principles of good local governance. Saludo gayud ako sa mga kawani sa atong local nga pangagamhanan kay inyo gayud kini nga kalampusan (I really salute the staff of our local government because this success is yours),” said Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy, one of the awardees of the SGLG in 2023.

He added that the program is a reflection of the local government’s unwavering dedication to enhancing the well-being of communities and ensuring that they meet the needs of their constituents.

Suyko also highlighted the fifteen barangays in northern Mindanao that received recognition in the annual search for outstanding Lupon Tagapamayapa, in addition to the SGLG awardees. He said the accolade is a testament to their exemplary performances and commendable contributions to promoting Katarungang Pambarangay.

The Outstanding Lupons are Barangay Kauswagan in Cagayan de Oro for the highly urbanized cities category, Barangay San Carlos in Valencia City, Bukidnon for the component cities category, Barangay Tipolo in Plaridel, Misamis Occidental for the 1st–3rd Class Municipality category, and Barangay Naburos in Baliangao, Misamis Occidental for the 4th–6th Class Municipality category.

The 1st runners-up are Barangay Gusa in Cagayan de Oro for the HUCs category, Barangay 18-A in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental for the CCs category, Barangay Bara in Opol, Misamis Oriental for the 1st–3rd Class Municipality category, and Barangay Calaran in Calamba, Misamis Occidental for the 4th–6th Class Municipality category.

The 2nd runners-up are Barangay Canitoan in Cagayan de Oro City for the HUCs category, Barangay 4 in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental for the CCs category, Barangay North Poblacion in Maramag, Bukidnon for the 1st–3rd Class Municipality category, and Barangay Caromatan in Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte for the 4th–6th Class Municipality category.

Suyko said these recognition to LGUs aim to promote transparency, accountability, and effective public service delivery, as well as recognize outstanding barangay justice committees for their exemplary performance in dispute resolution and community mediation, encouraging peace and order in communities. (RTP/PIA-10)
