DIPOLOG CITY (PIA) – As part of Dipolog City’s effort to protect sea turtle nesting grounds and ensure the survival of the local sea turtle population, the City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) continues to spearhead the release of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles back into the Sea.

On February 8, 2025, the CENRO facilitated the release of 119 Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings into the sea along the Dipolog City Boulevard.

According to CENRO Officer In-Charge Lawyer Gratian Paul Tidor, Dipolog has always been a turtle nesting site because of its location near the coast. Turtle nests are commonly found in Barangays Miputak, Olingan, Sicayab, and Central Barangay.

However, while the local government unit makes efforts to ensure the health and safety of the eggs, local residents also play a large role in the initiative.

Local fishermen and tourists often report sightings of turtle nests around the beaches to the CENRO, prompting them to take action.

“This is proof that environmental protection is always part of the progress that Dipolog continues to strive for,” Atty. Tidor said.

He also thanked the Dipolognons, who continue to support their initiative and said that in time, perhaps releasing sea turtles back into the sea could become an added attraction for the city. (PJF/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
