Dipolog SPED Center urge public to fight stigma surrounding children with special needs

DIPOLOG CITY (PIA) – After the success of their week-long celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week earlier this year, the Dipolog City Special Education (SPED) Center hoped to continue the momentum it has established in terms of public openness and acceptance.

Throughout the said event, SPED partnered with the local government unit, national government agencies, and private businesses to give their constituents controlled new experiences in the real world without overwhelming or overstimulating them.

During an interview during the Talakayan sa PIA ug DXDR, SPED Center School Head, Mr. Remryan Rebutazo highlighted the importance of eradicating myths and misconceptions surrounding children with special needs.

“People think they need to keep their distance, but that only strengthens the stigma,” he said.

“These children suffer from disabilities, not contagious diseases. What they need is understanding and a safe space to learn and explore.”

Ms. Aprilyn Bestre, one of the SPED teachers, told the story of one of her students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who showed incredible potential and intellect, and through the teachers’ patience and dedication, was eventually able to integrate into traditional classes.

The said student recently passed the Philippine Science High School Systems (PSHSS) National Competitive Examination, and will be attending the PSHSS this upcoming school year.

“They are not crazy,” said Matt Dino Villarin, one of the SPED Center’s teachers.

“These children are special, and I believe that they really need this kind of intervention to truly understand them rather than dismissing and judging them.

The Dipolog SPED Center is currently holding early enrolments until February 15, 2025. Parents and enrollees are encouraged to visit the SPED Center located in the Dipolog Pilot Demonstration School Compound in Rizal Avenue, Central Barangay, Dipolog City.

According to Mr. Rebutazo, the primary purpose of the early enrolment is to take account of the incoming population in order to properly plan and prepare for the upcoming school year. (EDT/PJF/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
