DMW, SSS team up for better social security benefits for OFWs

MANILA (PIA)—The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Social Security System (SSS) have forged a partnership aimed at improving access to social security benefits for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families.

This comes as Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and SSS President and CEO Rolando Macasaet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), embarking on a comprehensive information campaign about the SSS programs and membership benefits for OFWs.

Cacdac highlighted the significance of this partnership in providing financial and social security for OFWs in preparation for their reintegration with Philippine society.

“This partnership will aid our OFWs and their families in achieving financial and social security, especially during their transition back home. We recognize that they are eager for information on how to make informed decisions that enhance their social protection and financial independence,” Cacdac stated.

Macasaet, for his part, reiterated SSS’s dedication to supporting OFWs through accessible social security programs even as he took note of the substantial increase in OFW membership: “Previously, the OFW membership in SSS was around 1 million; now it has grown to between 4 and 5 million members, thanks to our extensive membership campaigns.”

The collaboration between DMW and SSS is integral to the government’s comprehensive reintegration program for OFWs and their families. The partnership aims to enhance access to social safety nets covering retirement, unemployment, and other needs.

Moreover, both agencies are exploring the creation of savings and provident funds specifically tailored for OFWs. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
