QUEZON CITY — Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro expressed his deep appreciation for the support provided by the Malaysian Government during the formal send-off ceremony at Col. Jesus Villamor Air Base on November 2, 2024. In his statement, he remarked, “I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Malaysian Government for their swift response to our request for assistance. Your support during this critical time has been invaluable in our recovery efforts following Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, and it exemplifies our strong partnership in times of need.”
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) held this ceremony to honor the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), which played a crucial role in providing humanitarian assistance following the devastation caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine. This mission, conducted from October 26 to November 2, 2024, involved the deployment of a Eurocopter EC725 Caracal long-range transport helicopter, operated by a team of 16 crew members, to aid disaster response efforts.
Civil Defense Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno also emphasized the importance of the RMAF’s contributions: “The contributions made by the Royal Malaysian Air Force have made a significant difference in our recovery efforts for the victims of STS Kristine in Bicol. Their prompt and effective support has not only provided essential aid but also strengthened our ties as we work together to overcome this tragedy.”
The send-off ceremony was attended by key officials, including LTGEN Stephen P. Parreño, Commanding General of the Philippine Air Force; MGEN Aristotle D. Gonzalez, Chief of Air Staff; MGEN Pablo E. Rustria Jr., Commander of the AIBDC; and Norjufri Nizar Edrus, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Malaysia in the Philippines. Representatives from both countries exchanged warm farewells, with some officials sharing hugs as they bid goodbye.
To commemorate the occasion and the collaborative efforts in alleviating the impact of the storm, a plaque was presented to the Philippine Air Force delegates. This act symbolizes the growing bond between the Filipino people and the Malaysian government, reinforcing the spirit of humanitarian aid and cooperation.
The deployment of the RMAF’s Eurocopter EC725 was closely coordinated by the Philippine Air Force with the Office of Civil Defense and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), ensuring the timely and efficient distribution of aid to the affected communities.
This collaborative effort underscores the strength of partnerships within ASEAN, reaffirming the commitment to regional stability and resilience in the face of natural disasters. The Philippines extends its deep appreciation to Malaysia for their unwavering support during this challenging time. (OCD)
