QUEZON CITY, (PIA) –On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Supertyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan), the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines, in partnership with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and the Balikbayan Project, presents the documentary “BALIKBAYAN: From Victims to Survivors” by Rob Hillstead and Jon Jon Rivero with its Asian premiere on November 9, Thursday, 5:30 pm, at the Cinematheque Centre Manila.
“BALIKBAYAN: From Victims to Survivors” is an award-winning feature documentary about the resilience of the residents of Leyte and follows the journey, spanning nearly two decades, of Filipino Canadian Jon Jon Rivero, who made a promise to his dying father to visit the Philippines and discover his roots.
The film showcases the grit and inspiring stories of the children, staff and volunteers of Streetlight Philippines, an orphanage in the heart of Tacloban City. The film premiered at the 2020 Edmonton International Film Festival in Canada and won the Audience Choice Award for Feature Documentary.
