DOH program aims to help Pinoys keep 20 healthy teeth by age 70

The Department of Health (DOH) wants Filipinos to keep at least 20 natural teeth by the age of 70.

This is the goal of their “7020 Vision: Oplan Iwas Bungal” advocacy.

DOH Ilocos Regional Director Paula Paz Sydiongco said that the campaign emphasizes that tooth loss should not be a normal part of aging, that with proper care, natural teeth can last a lifetime.

“The campaign highlights the importance of good oral health throughout different life stages, from pregnancy and childhood to adulthood, to promote healthier aging,” Sydiongco said.

The only catch is, good oral health should start early.

The first step stresses the importance of dental care during a child’s first 1,000 days.

Parents should teach proper brushing, limit sugary foods, and schedule regular dental visits.

These habits lay the foundation for lifelong oral health.

Second, oral care remains important at every stage of life.

Brushing twice daily, flossing, and eating a balanced diet help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Third, the DOH urges people to avoid unnecessary tooth extractions.

Dr. Christian Nebres, president of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) La Union Chapter, emphasized the importance of regular dental checkups, recommending visits twice a year for early detection and treatment of dental issues.

“Maintaining clean and strong teeth is essential — it’s hard to live without them. By practicing #Ngiting7020, we can ensure we’ll still have 20 healthy teeth by the age of 70,” Nebres said.

Fourth, diet plays a key role in keeping teeth strong.

Calcium-rich foods and plenty of water strengthen teeth and wash away bacteria.

Limiting sugary snacks and acidic drinks also prevents tooth erosion.

The “7020 Vision” aims to improve Filipinos’ quality of life through healthy aging.

To help in this advocacy in the Ilocos Region, the DOH recently provided free dental services and health lectures during the Oral Health Month 2025 event in Agoo, La Union.

Nebres reassured the public that there’s no need to fear visiting the dentist, emphasizing that oral health diseases are preventable.

“Don’t be afraid of dentists — we’re here to help you keep your teeth clean and maintain good oral health. With our years of education and experience, we teach the proper way to care for your teeth,” he said.

A healthy, natural smile at 70 is possible — if you start caring for your teeth today. (AMB/CCMT, PIA La Union)
