CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — The Department of Health (DOH) reminds the public to take extra precautions against heat-related illnesses that may arise from prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
In an interview, Provincial DOH Officer Dr. Ramon C. Bombais emphasized the importance of preventing unnecessary exposure to the sun, especially during peak heat hours.
He advised the public to avoid going outdoors between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.
He also reminded the public to wear light and breathable clothing and avoid tight or dark-colored outfits that can trap heat and cause discomfort.

The DOH noted that common heat-related illnesses in the country during the summer and Lenten period include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat rash or prickly heat. Heat stroke, the most severe among these, is characterized by hot and dry skin, confusion, rapid pulse, and potential loss of consciousness.
To avoid these illnesses, the DOH continues to encourage the public to take preventive measures by staying in well-ventilated or air-conditioned areas, limiting strenuous physical activities during the hottest parts of the day, and using protective gear such as hats or umbrellas when outside. Drinking plenty of water, even before feeling thirsty, is also highly encouraged.
Bombais assured the public that the DOH, along with the Provincial Health Office and Municipal Health Offices across Oriental Mindoro, are prepared to respond to any emergencies related to heat exposure.
He added that their offices are actively disseminating information to communities to prevent the occurrence of such illnesses and to educate the public on early warning signs and proper responses. (JJGS/PIA MIMAROPA-Oriental Mindoro)
