DOH urges LGUs to step up dengue prevention efforts with synchronized clean-up drives

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) in the Ilocos Region is taking a proactive approach to combating dengue with a multi-pronged strategy.

This includes urging all local government units (LGUs) to conduct synchronized clean-up drives across the region to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

The campaign coincides with the National Dengue Awareness Month, themed “Stop the Spread, Sama-Sama nating Sugpuin ang Dengue.”

The DOH, through its Disease Prevention and Control Section-Communicable Diseases Unit, spearheaded information and education campaigns in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte (June 20), and Agoo, La Union (June 24), targeting local chief executives and barangay health workers.

These sessions aimed to raise public awareness and promote preventive measures against dengue.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis, Medical Officer IV and head of the Communicable Disease Prevention Unit, emphasized the importance of community participation.

“Combating dengue requires a united front. By working together, we can effectively control mosquito populations and prevent the spread of this disease,” he said.

He emphasized the 4S strategy: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites in homes and communities; Self-protection by using long-sleeved clothing, pants, and mosquito repellant; Seek consultation from a doctor if you experience fever and other dengue symptoms; and Support fogging activities in your area during outbreaks.

The DOH provided long-lasting insecticide-treated nets and insecticide for misting operations to barangays in Sarrat.

In Agoo, the LGU organized a poster-making contest for barangay representatives, promoting creativity and awareness about dengue prevention.

While the region has seen a 25.8 percent decrease in dengue cases from January 1 to June 8, 2024, compared to the same period last year (1,047 cases vs. 1,411), vigilance remains crucial.

The highest number of cases were reported in Ilocos Sur (27), followed by Pangasinan (11), La Union (8), and Dagupan City (1) between June 2-8, 2024.

Notably, Ilocos Norte reported zero cases during this period.

Dr. Bobis highlighted that children aged 5–9 are most susceptible due to their outdoor playtime, making them prime targets for mosquito bites.

The Regional Health Promotion Unit launched a community-driven initiative called “Defeat Dengue Drive ng Barangay” in Barangay Bigbiga, San Fabian, Pangasinan.

This program encouraged participation from 21 out of 34 barangays, culminating in a synchronized clean-up drive to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

The activity, organized in partnership with Region 1 Medical Center-Public Health Unit (R1MC-PHU) and the San Fabian LGU, awarded cash prizes to the most prepared barangays in their fight against dengue.

National Dengue Awareness Month serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts and community engagement in preventing and controlling this potentially life-threatening disease.

By implementing the 4S strategy, participating in clean-up drives, and remaining vigilant, the Ilocos Region can effectively combat dengue and protect its citizens. (AMB/PIA Region 1)
