MANILA — Advancing the interests of the State to improve living conditions within penal facilities and bolster the reformation of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), the Department of Justice (DOJ) ventured into a partnership with some private companies to help promote the health and wellness of women PDLs at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mindanao.
In a decisive move by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” C. Remulla, through the efforts of the DOJ Action Center (DOJAC) headed by Undersecretary-in-Charge Margarita N. Gutierrez, the Secretary was able to forge a partnership with Huawei Technologies Philippines Inc. and mWell – Metro Pacific Health Tech Corporation aimed at promoting health and wellness among women PDLs.
On 18 September 2024, mWell formally turned over to Undersecretary Jesse Hermogenes Andres and Undersecretary Gutierrez at the DOJ the android tablets for distribution to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and CIW-Mindanao.
These gadgets will be used to access mWell’s fully integrated health application/platform where inmates can check or monitor their health condition.
Moreover, these tablets may be used for teleconsultations, retrieve lab results, secure medical prescriptions and other health-related concerns.
Usec Gutierrez, during the recently concluded Katarungan Caravan ‘legal aid/medical mission’ in Davao del Norte, handed the android tablets to the CIW-Mindanao.
The management of these equipment will be solely under the supervision of CIW Mindanao since PDLs have no access to gadgets or the internet.
“This initiative is testament to the DOJ’s bold commitment to improving the country’s penal and corrections system to help PDLs reform and prepare them to reintegrate into society as better people vital for the growth of our nation,” Remulla underscored.
Sec. Remulla also expressed his gratitude to mWell and Huawei Technologies Philippines, Inc. for consistently being a partner of the DOJ in the pursuit of noble causes such as these. (DOJ)
