DOLE gives hope to profiled child laborers in Oriental Mindoro

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — Marking both the 2024 World Day Against Child Labor and the 126th anniversary of Philippine Independence, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in MIMAROPA hosted a significant gathering at the DELROL Building in Barangay Katwiran II, Baco, Oriental Mindoro on June 12, 2024.

Under the theme “Bawat Bata, Malaya: Mithiin ng Nagkakaisang Bansa,” the activity brought together 140 profiled child laborers along with their parents from various barangays of Baco, highlighting the agency’s commitment to eradicate child labor.

These child laborers were identified through a collaborative effort involving DOLE, the Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro, the Municipal Government of Baco, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The event underscored the collective resolve to protect children’s rights and ensure their freedom from labor exploitation.

The event featured the singing of the “Batang Malaya” song, which set an empowering tone for the day. Parlor games were organized for the children, fostering a sense of camaraderie among the young attendees. Gifts were also distributed, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Also included in the activity are the testimonies from child laborers who have been aided by DOLE’s initiatives.

Baco Mayor Allan Roldan graced the occasion, delivering a heartfelt message to the audience. His speech emphasized the local government’s dedication to supporting child laborers and their families.

In an interview by the Philippine Information Agency with DOLE Oriental Mindoro Provincial Officer, Roderick Tamacay ,he said that the event was not only for the children but also for their parents.

Tamacay highlighted the livelihood assistance provided to the families and their inclusion in programs such as the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD).

The agency believes that by engaging both children and their parents, their efforts have significantly reinforced their holistic approach in addressing child labor.

The provision of livelihood assistance to the parents is a crucial component, ensuring that families have sustainable means of support, reducing the economic pressures that often lead to child labor. (JJGS/PIA MIMAROPA-Oriental Mindoro)
