DOLE inks MOA with UP to provide training, legal representation to labor unions

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the University of the Philippines entered into Agreement for the provision of training and legal representation to labor unions.

To formalize the partnership, DOLE Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Chancellor and UP College of Law Dean Atty. Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II, and UP Law Center Associate Dean Atty. Solomon F. Lumba sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on providing paralegal training and legal representation and assistance to workers on August 22, 2023, at UP Diliman.

The MOA aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of trade unionists and workers in general, in navigating legal procedures and help them seek redress in case of violations of their rights.

The DOLE, through the Bureau of Labor Relations, will provide technical assistance and necessary resources for the implementation of the approved paralegal training program, identify workers and trade unions who will participate in the program, and coordinate with the UP College of Law in the selection of cases and clients for legal representation and assistance.

Also present to witness the signing are DOLE Undersecretary Benedicto Ernesto R. Bitonio, Jr.,  Atty. Arnold F. De Vera, Program Director of the Workers and Employees Program, UP Law Center, and Atty. Theodore Te, Director of the Office of Legal Aid, UP Law Center. (dole/pia-ncr)
