DOLE-NCR underscores differential pay for night workers

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Department of Labor and Employment National Capital Region (DOLE NCR) stressed that workers who work during night time are entitled to differential pay.

During the 17th episode of the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas on Tuesday at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Auditorium in Quezon City, DOLE NCR Assistant Regional Director Atty. Olivia Obrero-Samson explained that the night shift differential pay is entitled to employees who render services between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

“Ang night shift differential pay, ‘yan ay entitled ang isang empleyado kung ‘yung trabaho ay ni-render niya between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. So, kung ‘yon ang schedule niya, ng work niya, kailangan mayroon po siyang 10 percent na night shift differential pay in addition doon sa kaniyang sahod for the eight hours,” explained Atty. Olivia.

(The night shift differential pay is what an employee is entitled to if the work is rendered between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. So, if that is the work schedule, he/she must have a 10 percent night shift differential pay in addition to his salary for eight hours.)

Under Article 86 of the Philippine Labor Code on Night shift differential, “Every employee shall be paid a night shift differential of not less than ten percent (10%) of his regular wage for each hour of work performed between ten o’clock in the evening and six o’clock in the morning.”

Atty. Olive said that DOLE-NCR has field offices in Metro Manila where complaints can be filed.

Likewise, DOLE-NCR Assistant Regional Director Atty. Jude Thomas Trayvila said the regional office provides legal services through its Public Assistance and Complaints Unit. (JEG/PIA-NCR)
