DOLE pushes for stronger protection of workers’ rights in Zamboanga Peninsula

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Zamboanga Peninsula is reinforcing its commitment to safeguard the rights and welfare of workers across the region, with a renewed push for accessible mechanisms to address labor-related concerns and violations.

DOLE Regional Director Albert E. Gutib emphasized that workers in Zamboanga City and the rest of the region should be fully aware of their rights and the avenues available to them when these rights are compromised.

“We are committed to protecting the rights and welfare of our workers. For those who feel that their labor rights are being violated, there are several accessible steps and channels they can take to seek assistance,” he said.

Among these is the Single Entry Approach (SENA) program, a fast, affordable, and non-litigious method for resolving labor issues. Through SENA, workers can file a Request for Assistance (RFA) at the nearest DOLE office.

Within 30 days, both parties—the worker and employer—are invited to a conciliation-mediation session to settle the dispute amicably. This helps prevent the escalation of cases to formal legal complaints.

In addition, DOLE works closely with the Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (TIPC), a body composed of labor, management, and government representatives.

While TIPC is not a venue for filing complaints, it serves as a platform for dialogue, promoting voluntary compliance and industrial peace by addressing broader and systemic labor concerns.

For workers currently employed but experiencing violations such as underpayment, non-payment of benefits, or unsafe working conditions, DOLE conducts labor inspections upon validation of reports.

Gutib assured that workers can report anonymously and their concerns will be handled with utmost confidentiality and professionalism.

DOLE reiterates its call to both employers and workers to be proactive in upholding labor standards, especially in the context of economic challenges and the rise of informal work arrangements in the region.

The agency encourages workers in Zamboanga City and the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga Sibugay to approach DOLE’s field offices for assistance and inquiries.

“DOLE remains steadfast in ensuring that every worker’s dignity is respected and every right is upheld. We call on all sectors to partner with us in promoting decent work, social justice, and inclusive development in Region 9,” said Gutib.
