DOLE XI launches emergency farm program to fight child malnutrition in Samal

DAVAO CITY (PIA) – A total of 700 people from Samal were trained on vegetable farming by the Department of Labor and Employment to help fight child malnutrition there.

The initiative was designed to improve the poor diet of the island’s children. Of the 700 beneficiaries, 200 are from families affected by a fire in Barangay Cawag.

Emmalyn H. Moriones, Public Employment Services Office (PESO) manager, said it is important that children receive proper nourishment so that they can become productive when they become adults. Following her remarks, Manny Carl D. Clarion, Labor Employment Officer (LEO) III, provided a detailed orientation covering the engagement’s specifics and necessary requirements.

The City Agriculture’s Office (CAGRO), represented by Ann Buot, provided gardening instructions and vegetable seeds to participants. Designated planting sites include Barangay Cawag, Barangay Peñaplata, and various community backyards across the island.

Following the harvests, barangays will organize feeding programs.

DOLE XI Regional Director lawyer Randolf C. Pensoy highlighted the collaborative effort’s significance in addressing malnutrition, noting the TUPAD program’s multifaceted benefits for youth, families, and the broader community.

The orientation empowered residents from various barangays, providing not only employment but also a renewed sense of dignity and purpose. Participants will receive a daily wage of P462 for their 10-day commitment, fostering a sense of community involvement and support. (RVC-PIA-11 with reports and photos from DOLE-XI)
