CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — A total of 3,792 young MIMAROPAns were able to get jobs through the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Government Internship Program (GIP) from July 2022 to June 30 this year.
The DOLE’s GIP is a component of the KABATAAN: 2000 under Executive Order 1439, series of 1993, which aims to provide opportunities and engage program beneficiaries to serve the general public in government agencies or entities projects and programs at the national and local levels.
“The program aims to provide opportunities and engage young workers to serve the general public in government,” DOLE MIMAROPA Assistant Regional Director Nicanor V. Bon said during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas in Calapan City on Tuesday, September 17.
He said that from January 1 to June 30, 2024, DOLE was able to provide temporary employment under its GIP to 721 young MIMAROPAns.
Bon added that out of the 721 beneficiaries placed as interns through GIP, 45 of whom were eventually hired as employees of the agency after the internship period.
“From January to June this year, mayroon na po tayong 721 beneficiaries at ang na-hire po dito ay 45. Ang na-disburse po nating budget dito ay almost P12 million,” he added.
Based on the report of DOLE MIMAROPA, from July to December 2022, there were 667 program beneficiaries, of whom 20 were hired as employees after the internship.
In 2023, the government was able to disburse more than P21.9 million for the payment of salaries of 2,404 young workers in MIMAROPA. Of the total GIP beneficiaries, 74 were also hired after the internship program.
Under the program, the beneficiaries will work for a minimum of three months to a maximum of six months.
Although the beneficiaries of the internship program do not have benefits like what regular government employees receive, Bon emphasized that what they get are opportunities and experience.
“When the beneficiaries finish their internship in the government offices where they are deployed, they are given a certificate of completion that they can use for employment,” he said. (ALG/PIA MIMAROPA)
