OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental (PIA) — Committed to enhancing post-harvest processing, upgrading rice mills, and boosting farmer and miller productivity, DOST Misamis Occidental has equipped four local rice mills with advanced technology.
The recipients of these upgrades include MVL Rice Mill in Tudela, ESB Rice Mill in Baliangao, Balat Rice Mill, and Pearl Rice Mill in Jimenez.
Through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), these businesses acquired advanced rice milling equipment and mechanical dryers, improving milling efficiency, reducing post-harvest losses, and enhancing the quality of milled rice.
On June 14, 2024, DOST-10 distributed 3,192 liters of Carrageenan Plant Growth Promoter (CPGP) to flood-affected rice farms in Tudela and Oroquieta City, benefiting 736 farmers.
CPGP, a biostimulant derived from seaweed, has been scientifically proven to boost plant growth, strengthen pest and disease resistance, and increase rice yields by up to 20 percent. Trainers taught farmers proper application techniques to maximize benefits.
“DOST remains committed to supporting the local rice industry in Misamis Occidental. Through SETUP, we provide entrepreneurs access to upgraded equipment, while our Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program offers livelihood support and other interventions for the community. We will continue leveraging these programs to strengthen food security in the province,” said Provincial Science and Technology Director Eufresnie Ann Simbajon.
She said DOST’s SETUP is a nationwide strategy that provides science and technology interventions, including seed funding for technology acquisition and equipment upgrading, which beneficiaries repay without interest. Meanwhile, the CEST Program supports communities through various initiatives, including technology adoption and livelihood assistance.
With these efforts, DOST-10 reaffirms its dedication to empowering local farmers and millers, ensuring a more resilient and productive rice industry in Misamis Occidental. (DOST Misamis Occidental/PIA 10/MisOcc)
