DOST-ASTI, PIA ink deal to deliver S&T to grassroots

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on Thursday in a bid to promote the latter’s programs and projects at the grassroots level through a series of information and education campaign.

The agreement entails that the PIA will develop a communication plan for DOST-ASTI, aiming to introduce science and technology at the grassroots level and foster a culture of scientific curiosity among the public.

Present during the event are DOST-ASTI Director Franz A. De Leon and PIA Director General Jose A. Torres Jr., together with other officials of the institute.

In his speech, PIA Director General Torres underscored the importance of such agreement towards nation-building by focusing on the improvement of science and technology.

This partnership between the PIA and ASTI highlights our mutual dedication to promote awareness to ASTI’s programs and projects,” he said.

Through this collaboration we hope that the power of information and communication can help foster a culture of scientific curiosity up to the grassroots level,” he added.

For his part, ASTI Director De Leon  highlighted that the partnership with PIA is aimed at bringing science to the Filipino people, particularly among the geographically-disadvantaged population in the country.

Our partnership with the Philippine Information Agency, to be formalized through this MOA signing, strengthens DOST-ASTI’s objective to bring science to the people,” said De Leon.

The Advanced Science and Technology Institute is an agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-ASTI) mandated to undertake research and development activities aimed at strengthening and modernizing information and communications technology and microelectronics.

They specialize in research and development in the field of information and communications technology, microelectronics, technology transfer, and space technology.

Celebrating its 37th year anniversary this year, the ASTI conducted their first ever ASTICon with the theme “Together, We Can.” It will run from July 18 to 19, 2024 at the Novotel Manila, Cubao, Quezon City.

ASTICon or the Advanced Science, Technology and Innovation Convention aims to establish itself as the premier information and communications technology research and development showcase event in the country.

This agency-wide event seeks to bring together stakeholders from the private sector, local government units, academia, and other government agencies (NGAs) to foster exchange of ideas and create collaborative opportunities between its partner agencies. (JVD/PIA-NCR)
