DOST awards P994-K grant to advance breastfeeding research initiative

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – Dr. Melanie F. Lear, Professor VI in Western Mindanao State University recently received a grant worth Php994,939.00 to determine the factors influencing exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) practices among mothers in selected communities in Zamboanga Peninsula.

Exclusive breastfeeding is widely recognized as the most effective way to improve the nutritional health of children under five. Poor nutrition during this critical period can lead to long-term health issues that persist into adulthood.

Dr. Lear conducts an interview with a community in Zamboanga City for her research.

Dr. Lear’s study aims to improve infant feeding practices among breastfeeding mothers and reduce infant morbidity and mortality. To achieve this, it is essential to gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to exclusive breastfeeding as well as the factors that influence these practices.

The research will help readers learn more about mother’s knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors across the Zamboanga Peninsula regarding EBF practices, as well as the variables that impact women’s decision towards EBF.

Looking into the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) data for the Expanded National Nutrition Survey from 2018-2021, timely breastfeeding initiation (61%) is very common in Zamboanga Peninsula; however, exclusive breastfeeding among infants 0-5 months is low and the continued breastfeeding up to five years is not very common.

This study on exclusive breastfeeding includes special classes for lactating mothers in the various locales, partnerships with local government units within Zamboanga Peninsula and various publications on EBF in the communities.
