LAMUT, Ifugao (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) bolsters public health initiatives in Ifugao province with the recent conduct of technology training on salt iodization and proper operation and maintenance of the DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute salt iodization machine.
The two-day training conducted at the Tourism Village in Lamut marked a significant step in the Local Grant-In-Aid project titled Science and Technology (S&T) Intervention for the Establishment of Salt Iodization in Lamut, Ifugao, that aims to lessen Iodine Deficiency Disorder in Lamut, as well in the whole province.
Barangay and Municipal Nutrition Council members, officials of Lamut Local Government Unit (LGU) and Barangay Población East, Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representatives, and Población East Women’s Organization participated in the training conducted by DOST-Cordillera through the Provincial Science and Technology Office-Ifugao.
The owner and manager of JM Salt Manufacturing, a DOST assisted firm in Infanta, Pangasinan, served as the resource person. He offered valuable insights on salt iodization processes and technology, enriching the understanding of the participants.
Poblacion East Barangay Captain Imelda Cawagdan committed to the operationalization of the salt iodization facility. She thanked the DOST-CAR, PSTO-Ifugao and LGU-Lamut for their unwavering support and collaboration towards the implementation of the project.
Equipped with the basic knowledge and skills and with the guidance of DOST, BLGU-Poblacion East is now ready to produce iodized salt for the province, she said.
Lamut Mayor Victomar H. Bunnol pledged support for the salt iodization project. He underscored the significance of a “negosyo” mindset intertwined with honesty and transparency, asserting their vital role in ensuring the project’s success and sustainability.
The DOST and the LGU Lamut signed earlier this year a memorandum of agreement for the establishment of salt iodization facility in the area. This is in line with Republic Act 8172, or the Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide(ASIN). (JDP/MBL-PIA Ifugao)
