ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) strengthens its initiatives on research and development to align with national priorities.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the significance of universities and research institutions in driving economic growth and community development through science, technology, and innovation (STI) during the Mindanao Cluster Call Conference in Zamboanga City gathering more than 200 participants from Mindanao and BARMM.
Secretary Solidum underscored the importance of a collaborative approach to R&D, stating that efforts should be anchored on four strategic pillars: human well-being, wealth creation, resilience, and sustainability.
“These pillars ensure that our scientific and technological advancements directly contribute to improving lives, fostering economic growth, building disaster-resilient communities, and securing a sustainable future for the next generations,” Solidum said.
Mindanao’s universities and research institutions are being urged to take a more proactive role in translating research findings into tangible applications. Secretary Solidum stressed that R&D should not be limited to publications but should lead to commercialization and industry adoption.
“Academia should not only focus on publishing research but also on transforming their innovations into products and solutions that can be utilized by industries and communities. When research leads to economic opportunities, we create jobs and improve the quality of life for Filipinos,” he added.
DOST has identified Mindanao as a key region for advancing the green economy, particularly in areas such as bamboo and coconut product innovation. Research institutions are encouraged to develop technologies that support circular economy practices, maximizing resources while minimizing waste.
As Mindanao continues to develop its research capabilities, the collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector will be instrumental in transforming the region into a hub for sustainable innovation, ensuring that scientific progress translates into meaningful change for its people.
