MANILA, (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), the country’s lead agency in food and nutrition research and development, opened its 2-day, 50th DOST-FNRI Seminar Series (FSS) on Wednesday, July 3, at the Sheraton Manila Hotel in Pasay City.

There are 35 projects, and six new tools on nutrition will be launched today so its a 2-day technical session on the discussions of the projects. There will be exhibits, and [food and nutrition technology] tools will be launched,” DOST-FNRI chief Director III Atty. Lucieden G. Raz told the PIA-NCR on the sidelines of the event.

The annual seminar series, formerly known as the Series of Seminars in Food and Nutrition, serves as a venue for the dissemination of completed research and development (R&D) outputs and science and technology (S&T) activities among stakeholders in the food and nutrition community, as well as in allied fields and the general public.

Since its inception in 1975, the FSS has encouraged individuals to adopt practices that improve health and well-being, while guiding policymakers in creating programs to address the country’s problems on malnutrition and food security. The seminar series has also been a platform for intellectual dialogues and meaningful collaborations among stakeholders in the field of nutrition and food technology.

This year’s milestone event, themed “Golden Year of DOST-FNRI Seminar Series,” featured an audio-visual presentation on the evolution of the FSS, followed by a Golden Anniversary Testimonial and Lecture by Marinduque Governor Presbitero Jose Velasco, Jr. and Dr. Gerard Bryan Gonzales, Associate Professor of Nutrition at Ghent University in Belgium and a DOST Balik Scientist.

Governor Velasco shared how the FSS has served as a continuing education for the province’s nutrition and health frontline workers, such as the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and Barangay Health Workers (BHW).

Dr. Gonzales, on the other hand, discussed global trends in sharing food and nutrition research.

The 2-day seminar will also feature six technical sessions covering undergraduate research competition, nutrition tools and guidelines, life stage nutrition, hidden hunger, innovations in food safety and quality, and nutrition and food environment.

Professionals and students of nutrition and dietetics, food technology, medicine, nursing, and related courses, including representatives from government agencies, private institutions, the food industry, and other organizations concerned with food and nutrition, participated in the DOST-FNRI Seminar Series.
