ODIONGAN, Romblon (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology MIMAROPA (DOST MIMAROPA) has released over ₱100 million in funding to strengthen and enhance the operations of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the region.
DOST MIMAROPA Regional Director Ma. Josefina Abilay, speaking during Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas in Calapan City, revealed that since the Marcos administration took office until 2024, the agency has funded around 100 MSMEs through the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).
SETUP is a flagship program of DOST designed to help MSMEs enhance operations, boost productivity, develop new products, access wider markets, and upgrade workfoce capabilities. Businesses that qualify for the program receive support in acquiring modern equipment, enhancing product quality, and adopting innovative processes.
Through this initiative, DOST MIMAROPA has generated 408 direct jobs in the region, with indirect contributions extending across the local supply chain.
According to Abilay, MSMEs supported by SETUP reported an annual average productivity increase of 36.84 percent, demonstrating the program’s success.
Also, these businesses recorded a combined gross sales of ₱1.745 billion from 2022 to 2024, underscoring the initiative’s role in fostering economic growth and business resilience.
One of the most promising MSMEs that DOST MIMAROPA has supported is Shapes Bakeshop, a well-known bakery in Odiongan, Romblon.
While the business had already built a strong reputation locally, its owner, Kim Fernandez, aspired to expand its reach across the island. Seeking assistance from DOST’s SETUP, she received funding, payable within three years, to acquire state-of-the-art baking equipment such as a dough mixer, stainless top table, and shelves.
Apart from modernizing its operations, Shapes Bakeshop benefited from new packaging and labeling materials provided by the agency, significantly improving its product presentation.
Due to its successful implementation of technology and business upgrades, Shapes Bakeshop was recognized as MIMAROPA Region’s Best SETUP Adopter in 2019.
SETUP program is open to entrepreneurs who are eager to improve their business operations and integrate technological advancements into their enterprises.
Abilay encourages MSMEs across MIMAROPA to take advantage of the program by submitting project proposals to the nearest Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) of DOST MIMAROPA. (PJF/PIA MIMAROPA-Romblon)
