DOST Ilocos to hold Handa Pilipinas expo, SciTech Week to bolster disaster resilience, innovation

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in the Ilocos Region is set to host a major science extravaganza with two back-to-back events: the Handa Pilipinas Luzon Leg and the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW).

Both events aim to bolster science, technology, and innovation (STI) in the region, happening from July 3-5, 2024, at the Plaza del Norte Hotel and Convention Center in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

Kicking off the event on July 3 is “Handa Pilipinas: Innovations in Climate and Disaster Resilience Luzon Leg.”

This event will showcase cutting-edge technologies and solutions designed to assist local government units (LGUs) and other organizations in preparing for and responding to disasters.

Around 5,000 participants, primarily local Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) officers from across Luzon, are expected to attend.

They will gain valuable insights through forums focusing on the four phases of DRRM: disaster prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response, and rehabilitation and recovery.

Additionally, government initiatives in risk management will be discussed, with the ultimate goal of improving community resilience and well-being.

“Local government participation is crucial for this event. We encourage LGUs and their local DRRM offices (LDRRMOs) to join us and explore the various technologies that can address specific concerns within their areas,” said Michael John Maquiling, DOST-Ilocos Region DRRM focal person, in a recent episode of PIA’s Kapihan sa Ilocos.

The event also provides opportunities for generators and developers to market and promote their products, which will attract future investors since DOST invited manufacturers that will make these materials available in the market.

The following two days (July 4–5) will feature the 2024 RSTW, which complements the National Science Technology Week being held in November.

This event brings together scientists, researchers, educators, developers, business leaders, and owners to explore exciting advancements in STI and its role in national progress.

Attendees can expect a vibrant technology exhibit and bazaar, showcasing textile innovation solutions alongside a captivating fashion show.

Training sessions in robotics, discussions on agri-aqua technology, forums on sustainable communities, and various other science, technology, and engineering (STEM)-related activities are also planned.

According to Maquiling, this year’s RSTW promises to be the biggest one yet organized by the DOST Ilocos Region.

“The focus on DRRM sets it apart from previous events. We’ll have a strong focus on DRRM technologies—the most extensive display we’ve ever offered—alongside activities promoting the green economy,” he said.

This celebration promises to be a valuable resource for local communities, businesses, and stakeholders across the Ilocos Region.

By showcasing cutting-edge technologies, promoting collaboration, and fostering a culture of innovation, the DOST aims to empower communities to build a more resilient and sustainable future. (AMB/REB/PIA Region 1)
