DOST lauds implementation of bamboo housing in South Cotabato

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) commended the efforts of all agencies in implementing the first bamboo housing project in Soccsksargen located at the Balay Pag-asa Village Phase 1, Cannery Site, Polomolok, South Cotabato.

Sammy Malawan, regional director of DOST in Region 12, said the project is relevant to DOST’s commitment to strengthen the implementation of the Science, Technology, and Innovation for Circular Economy (STI4CE) Framework through the Kawayanihan Movement.

“Through the Polomolok Bamboo Housing Program, we are opening doors for our local bamboo growers, empowering them to market their produce, create more jobs, and drive economic growth in our communities,” Malawan stated, underscoring the significance of using bamboo for this project to promote a green and circular economy.

The project’s first 20 sustainable housing units will be constructed using Complete Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT). These units will be given to families whose houses were damaged by the 2019 series of earthquakes that affected parts of Region 12.

The project is a collaboration between Polomolok’s local government unit, Mahintana Foundation Inc., Dole Philippines, BASE Bahay Foundation, and concerned government agencies.

According to Life-Cycle Assessments by using bamboo as the major material, the project beefs up the promotion of green technology as CBFT houses boast a 70 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional homes.

It also promotes disaster resilience because bamboo is a durable material that is tested to resist typhoons, earthquakes, and other calamities. The use of bamboo also offers sustainable livelihood by not only providing livelihood opportunities but also developing workers’ skills through technical training.

The official also highlighted the use of local renewable resources, particularly bamboo, in reinforcing socio-economic growth and environmental stewardship.

It can be noted that the DOST pushed the Kawayanihan Movement following its attempt for the Guinness World Record for most people planting bamboo simultaneously in October this year.

During the simultaneous bamboo planting in Carmen, Cotabato, Malawan urged the public to not only support the activity but also help promote a climate resilient and sustainable environment.

Tayo na at magbayanihan patungo sa isang matatag, maginhawa, at panatag na buhay sa pamamagitan ng Kawayanihan (Let’s come together and help each other achieve a stable, comfortable, and peaceful life through Kawayanihan),” he stressed. (SJDM – PIA Region 12)
