DOST launches goat embryo transfer technology in Cagayan Valley

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela (PIA) – – The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) presented its goat embryo transfer technology to small ruminant farmers in the Cagayan Valley Region.

Secretary Renato Solidum said the initiative will further boost the small ruminant industry in the region and in the whole country as well.

He expressed his appreciation for the development of the technology and assured support for the production of small ruminants in the Cagayan Valley region.

He said, if the protocol of embryo transfer in the Philippines is successful, the country may no longer resort to the importation of goats.

Dr. Jonathan Nayga, the researcher, presented the tedious and thorough research procedures conducted in partnership with the Isabela State University’s Small Ruminants Research Center.

He said goat embryo technology transfer allows for the acquisition of genetic materials from a superior animal and be transferred to an inferior animal as a surrogate.

“The process hastens the improvement of genes than in a natural mating,” he said.

Nayga also said the technology maybe adopted by the interested goat raisers in the communities once finalized.

Meanwhile, a feed manufacturing company has already committed to adopt the technology.

An agreement was also signed between the manufacturing company and ISU to fund technology transfer and equipment acquisition. The agreement also ensures the provision of animals for training and services to the technology adopters. (MGE/PIA Isabela)
