DOST-PAGASA enhances heat index monitoring system amid rising temperatures

MANILA, (PIA) —In line with the 160th National Meteorological Day and the 75th World Meteorological Day, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration of the Department of Science and Technology (PAGASA) has announced significant improvements to its Heat Index Monitoring and Forecasting System to provide more accurate and localized information on heat stress conditions nationwide.

The heat index, or “apparent temperature,” indicates how hot it feels when humidity is factored into the air temperature. With extreme heat events becoming more frequent, DOST-PAGASA has upgraded its capabilities to help communities better prepare for heat-related risks.

Key enhancements include:

  • Expanded Monitoring Network: Additional weather stations have been integrated, improving the accuracy and localization of heat index readings.
  • Advanced Forecasting System: DOST-PAGASA is adopting high-resolution climate models to enhance the reliability of heat index forecasts, ensuring more precise predictions.
  • Comprehensive Forecasting Coverage: Municipal- and city-level heat index forecasts will soon be available via a web portal, allowing users to access potential hourly heat index values for up to five days in advance.
  • Improved Public Advisory System: A more detailed heat index classification system has been introduced, providing clearer guidance on associated health risks and recommended precautions.
  • Enhanced Digital and Media Integration: From March 1 to June 30, 2025, forecasts will be regularly disseminated through the PAGASA website, social media platforms, and media partners to ensure wider public awareness.

PAGASA urges the public to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The agency also encourages local government units, schools, and workplaces to implement heat stress mitigation measures during extreme heat conditions.

PAGASA remains committed to providing reliable climate and weather services to ensure the safety and resilience of all Filipinos against extreme weather conditions,” the agency said.
