NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) – Mt. Kanlaon continues to show a high level of activity so people should maintain vigilance as it is possible that a phreatic eruption could happen anytime without warning, a volcanologist from the Department Of Science And Technology- Philippine Institute Of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) said.
Based on their 24-hour monitoring last June 17 at 11:00 am, she said six earthquakes were recorded, degassing reaching 300 meters and 1,800 tonnes sulfur dioxide ejection, volcanologist Mari-Andylene Quintia, said.
She noted that the volcano continues to inflate (namamaga) which means there is a pressure underneath pushing that could be magma movement.
Quintia said that DOST-PHIVOLCS started to observe the inflated volcano way back in 2022 and has remained in that stage until it erupted on June 3, 2024 which continues at present.
She said the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) remains in effect and should be observed to avoid dangers.
According to Quintia, there were no more lahar reports since the incident occurred during the first week of the month.
“A possibility that sediments may have already been eroded. Let’s continue to be vigilant as the volcano shows signs of restiveness. We at the DOST-PHIVOLCS will continue to monitor its activity,” she said. (AAL/Lljr/ PIA6 Negros Occ.)
