DOST turns over e-trike, solar-powered charging stations to Dapitan City

DAPITAN CITY (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has provided an eco-friendly alternative to fuel-powered transportation, turning over six electric tricycles (e-trikes) and two Charging-in-Minutes (CharM) stations to the city government.

Green Wheels Roll Out. A fleet of electric tricycles stands ready for deployment, promoting eco-friendly public transportation.

Funded through the DOST’s Grant-in-Aid (GIA) program and Small Enterprise Upgrading Technology Program (SETUP), respectively, the new units and charging stations aim to promote cost-effective transportation, reinforcing the city’s commitment to a “smarter and greener” Dapitan.

The CharM charging stations, primarily powered by solar energy, can fully charge an e-trike in 30 minutes, providing enough power for a day’s operation at a cost of about 80 pesos. This significantly reduces fuel costs and increases drivers’ profits.

During the turnover ceremony, DOST Undersecretary Sancho A. Mabborang commended the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) and the Dapitan City government for their high-impact initiatives.

He emphasized that the introduction of e-mobility projects in Dapitan City is a significant step toward environmental sustainability and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.

Powering the Future. A newly installed charging station stands ready to support electric tricycles, promoting cleaner transportation.

“This groundbreaking technology, developed through a DOST-funded project, plays a crucial role in advancing the government’s e-vehicle program by promoting efficient and sustainable transportation solutions,” Mabborang said.

Officials expressed hope the initiative would attract more investments in clean energy and encouraged other cities to adopt similar programs.

As the transition gains momentum, Dapitan City establishes itself as a pioneer in sustainable transport innovation in the province, demonstrating how smaller urban centers can make significant strides toward a cleaner and greener future. (EDT/PJF/KC-OJT/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
