CABAGAN, Isabela (PIA) — For culture and tourism’s sake, the municipal government has initiated the revival and promotion of the town’s traditional mode of public transportation: the Kalesa.
With the assistance of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 2, the event dubbed “KKK Festival” (short for Kalesa, Kabayu, and Kalseru), was successfully celebrated, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and tradition of the town.
The festival, a highly anticipated celebration, brought together residents, visitors, and stakeholders to witness the beautifully decorated Kalesas, horse-drawn carriages traditionally used by the community for transportation. The Kalesas, adorned with vibrant designs, paraded the streets, and were judged by DOT personnel, adding a touch of nostalgic elegance to the festivities
In addition to the Kalesa parade, the local government also inaugurated the newly established Cabagan Municipal Museum, marking a milestone in preserving, and showcasing the town’s cultural identity. The museum also serves to support local farmers and their livelihoods.
Mayor Christopher Mamauag took pride in the museum, stating that it stands as a testament to Cabagan’s commitment to cultural preservation, and featuring a wide range of artifacts and exhibits that celebrate the municipality’s unique heritage.
A centerpiece of the museum is the Irraya exhibit, which highlights traditional crafts, artworks, and historical items that reflect the culture of the first settlers of Cabagan. The Irraya exhibit not only honors the town’s ancestral roots but also serves as an inspiration for future generations to appreciate and preserve their cultural identity.
DOT Regional Director Troy Alexander Miano commended the local officials for their enthusiasm and dedication to preserving and promoting local culture, integrating it into tourism development.
“The DOT Region 2 is proud to support Cabagan in its efforts to celebrate its cultural heritage and promote sustainable tourism. The establishment of the municipal museum and the display of the Irraya exhibit exemplify the importance of preserving our rich history while paving the way for both cultural and economic development,” Miano said.
He also assured the locals that DOT Region 2 remains committed to promoting the Cagayan Valley region as a premier cultural and tourism destination.
“By supporting events such as the KKK Festival, and initiatives such as the opening of the Cabagan Municipal Museum, the department aims to foster collaboration with local governments and communities in showcasing the best of what the region has to offer,” Miano added.
