DOTr inaugurates community port in Zambo island barangay

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – The Department of Transportation officially inaugurated the Tigtabon Community Port, a project aimed at enhancing connectivity and boosting the local economy for residents of Barangay Tigtabon.

The event underscored the national and local governments’ commitment to infrastructure development and economic empowerment.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon personally visited the inauguration of the new port in the island barangay Tigtabon, Zamboanga City on March 22, 2025.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon highlighted that Zamboanga plays a crucial role in the nation’s maritime economy, particularly in agar-agar production, where it ranks No. 1 in the country. He lauded the efforts of local officials in ensuring infrastructure projects align with the community’s livelihood needs.

“This port is not just infrastructure, it is a lifeline,” Dizon said.

“Compared to the old ports, which were small and dilapidated, this new facility is modern, sturdy and built to withstand any storm. This is just the beginning. Every barangay in Zamboanga deserves this level of development, and we are committed to making it happen,” he added.

Dizon reassured residents that seven more ports will be inaugurated in Zamboanga City before the end of the administration’s term. He stressed the DOTr and its partners’ commitment to improving maritime infrastructure and ensuring coastal communities thrive.

“We are not just making promises—we are delivering results. You can count on us to continue working for your progress,” Dizon said.

The turnover ceremony ended with a pledge from the DOTr, the local government and other key stakeholders to sustain the momentum of development in Zamboanga City. The new port will benefit approximately 5,000 residents and stands as a symbol of resilience, economic potential and a brighter future for coastal communities.

With the national government’s support and the dedication of local leaders, Zamboanga’s maritime industry is set to grow, bringing prosperity to future generations.  (EDT/MLE/PIA Region 9-Zamboanga City)
