DOTr outlines 3 efficient approaches to address NCR traffic congestion

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has outlined three key strategies to tackle the crippling traffic congestion that costs the Philippine economy an estimated P3.5 billion ($64 million) per day in the Metro Manila region.

During the Build Better More Infrastructure Forum organized by the Presidential Communications Office recently, DOTr Undersecretary Timothy John Batan detailed the multi-pronged approach, which includes rationalizing the public transport network, accelerating infrastructure projects, and enhancing enforcement through collaboration with local government units (LGUs).

Batan stated that rationalizing the public transport network is crucial, as it would allow roads to be used more efficiently under the DOTr’s Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program. This includes not only upgrading jeepneys but also optimizing routes and capacities.

If we rationalize our public transport network, then that would mean that we are using our roads more efficiently,” Batan explained. “So that is one of the ways that we can address a traffic situation under our PUV modernization program.”

The DOTr is also pushing forward with major infrastructure projects, such as the Metro Manila Subway, the North-South Commuter Railway, MRT-7, and the LRT-1 extension. Batan emphasized that these rail initiatives are “moving at full speed ahead” to alleviate the congestion.

Additionally, the DOTr is working to enhance enforcement efforts in collaboration with the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and LGUs. Batan stressed that addressing the traffic problem requires a multi-agency approach, as it involves not only infrastructure but also route optimization and compliance with traffic rules by the private sector.

In order to effectively and sustainably address it, we need infrastructure. We need root optimization. We need enforcement. We need the private sector to pitch in as well by following our traffic rules,” Batan said.

By combining these three diversified approaches – rationalizing public transport, accelerating infrastructure projects, and strengthening enforcement – the DOTr aims to provide a comprehensive solution to the longstanding traffic woes plaguing Metro Manila. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
