QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) assured the public that the integrity of the Metro Rail Transit-7 (MRT-7) remains intact despite the recent collapse of one of its posts along West Avenue in Quezon City.
DOTr spokesperson Ramon Ilagan said that the agency is currently gathering reports on the incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon. He noted that partial operations of the MRT-7 could still proceed, with hopes of beginning by the end of 2025 or early next year.
“We cannot avoid such accidents, but this one’s part of the MRT-7. We’re just getting some reports,” he said.
He added, “The good thing about this is that even if there was an accident, it already happened now rather than when it’s operational. We should really ensure the safety of our countrymen.”
The incident revealed visible fallen steel bars and scaffolding. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although nearby electric cable wires were affected.
The DOTr has previously indicated that 12 stations of the MRT-7 are expected to begin partial operations by the fourth quarter of 2025. The MRT-7 will span 22 kilometers with a total of 14 stations, including key locations such as Quezon-North Avenue Joint Station, Quezon Memorial Circle, and San Jose del Monte.
Once fully operational, the MRT-7 is anticipated to reduce travel time from Quezon City to San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan to just 35 minutes. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
